Vocal recording sessions

Sing, rap or record spoken word in a dedicated iso booth while an engineer handles levels, takes and exports you can hand straight to a mixer.

Close-up vocalist in isolation booth with pop filter and condenser mic.

At Labsterra in east Amsterdam, vocal sessions are built around what listeners notice first: a voice that sits clearly in the track without you guessing timing or gain in the booth. Our Vocal recording pairs an isolation booth with an 18 m² control room and 16 mic preamps so we can match microphone and chain to your tone and genre.

Bring a finished instrumental, a home-studio demo or lyrics plus references — we load material ahead of time and align on goals through contact. For warm-up and travel tips, see how to prepare your voice for the studio. Mixing and mastering are separate services; after tracking you can book mixing here or take clean, labelled WAVs elsewhere.

Process

  1. 01

    Brief and booking

Share tempo, key, references and files. We confirm date, rate and whether an hour or half day fits your plan.

  2. 02

    Booth setup

Mic choice, headphone mix, pop-filter distance and session markers — usually ready to record within twenty minutes.

  3. 03

    Tracking

Full passes, then targeted lines and ad-libs on separate tracks. We flag favourites as we go for faster comping.

  4. 04

    Wrap and export

Comping on request, light cleanup and WAV delivery the same day when schedule allows; archive per our retention policy.

Who books vocal time

Solo artists finishing a single, rappers planning an EP, songwriters who need a crisp demo for a publisher, bands adding leads after a band session, and spoken-word or narrative voices for music projects — the booth is set up for one performer at a time with detail in mind.

We work with artists across Amsterdam and beyond; Tram 10 stops at Czaar Peterstraat; it is about a three-minute walk to number 213. From Oostplein metro (lines 51, 53 and 54) allow roughly ten minutes on foot along Czaar Peterstraat. gets you to Czaar Peterstraat 213. Hours: Tuesday–Friday 10:00–20:00, Saturday 11:00–18:00. Closed Monday and Sunday.. Bookings for anyone under 16 need a parent or guardian aligned in advance, per our terms and conditions.

Booth and signal path

The building has 3 iso booths; vocal work uses the cabin tuned for singing and speech. Treatment is controlled without feeling airless, and a window keeps eye contact with the engineer.

We often compare two mic paths on the same line: condenser for air and detail, dynamic for loud vocals or close rap. Distance, height and pop-filter angle — together with preamp gain — set proximity and sibilance so later fixes stay modest.

Session flow

On arrival we verify files and lyrics, set tempo and song map in the DAW, and build a headphone mix you can tweak: more or less instrumental, a touch of reverb, or dry if you prefer to hear pitch clearly. Many singers drop one earcup to hear themselves in the room; tell us and we keep bleed low.

We capture full passes where it makes sense, then punch tricky words, high notes or timing. Doubles and ad-libs land on clearly named tracks. Breaks are part of the plan — a tired voice costs more time than a short rest.

Files to send or bring

When you can, send instrumentals as 24-bit WAV without a guide vocal, plus lyrics and reference tracks whose vocal tone you like. Note BPM and key if you know them. Your own headphones are fine if you rely on them.

Unsure about stems or formats? Read exchanging stems for a mix — the same habits help when prepping backing tracks. We usually reply within 2 business days at [email protected].

Delivery formats

By default you receive consolidated vocal WAVs aligned from bar one, 24-bit / 48 kHz unless you agree another sample rate. We can also export individual takes or a working session for your DAW.

Comping happens in session or right after, depending on time booked. Light breath or click reduction is available on request; heavy tuning or stylised effects are scoped separately so a natural take remains. Projects are kept 24 months on our systems (48 TB archive capacity); see privacy policy for retention and your rights.

FAQ

How long for one song?

For a three- to four-minute track with verses, chorus and a few doubles, most artists plan two to four hours. Unsure? Book €340 — it leaves room for breaks and comping without rushing.

Can someone sit in the control room?

One or two trusted guests are welcome if focus stays on performance. Larger groups are better as a separate listen — mention it on contact.

Do you tune vocals?

On request we can apply discreet correction on chosen lines. We agree upfront how natural or obvious it should be; stylised auto-tune lives on its own track.

What if I am ill on the day?

Tell us as soon as you can at 020 244 18 06. Reschedule free up to 5 days before the slot; after that deposit and cancellation rules in terms apply. Hoarse? Postpone rather than push the voice.

Can you mix right after vocals?

Yes when capacity allows. Mixing is billed separately at mixing rates; we align delivery and revision rounds (2 rounds on mix/master per our rules) during intake.
